PAINT REMOVAL
Soda blasting is the answer for you car buffs looking to restore your ride. Unlike sandblasting, soda leaves the metal with a smooth finish. Because soda has a Moh’s hardness of only 2.4, it doesn’t “pit” the metal like other abrasives can. Also, since there is very little heat build up, soda will not warp metal the way that sand might.
Here are some pictures of a 1971 Brockway truck cab that we blasted.
As you can see, after blasting, the cab is almost ready for primer and paint. Of course, there needs to be some smoothing out of dings that were in the metal from years of use, but there is no need for a skim coat over the body. Since sodium bicarbonate is slightly alkaline, it is recommended that the metal be rinsed with a vinegar or citric acid solution before painting just to neutralize any residue. After that, paint away.
For areas with heavy rust, we can perform spot blasting with a heavier abrasive.
